About the Book
Mizo Songs and Folk Tales, edited by Laltluangliana Khiangte, is a part of Sahitya Akademi’s project on Indian Literature in Tribal Languages and Oral Traditions. This volume addresses the long-standing need to bring forth a systematic collection of tribal literature from India. It beautifully explores the dialects and languages spoken by the tribes, a vast and diverse group across the country. Many of the literary compositions in these songs and tales have survived in oral tradition, although some tribal languages have now embraced writing as a means of preserving their literary heritage. Most of these languages, however, have rarely been translated into English or other Indian languages, making this volume an important contribution to preserving and showcasing tribal imagination.
