About the Book
This groundbreaking volume delves into the complex realities of disability in India, bridging the gap between theory and lived experience, and between policy and practice. Drawing from both South Asian theoretical frameworks and empirical studies, the book offers a rich, multidisciplinary exploration of how persons with disabilities experience and navigate their worlds in the Indian context.
With contributors from a wide range of fields—including sociology, economics, political science, linguistics, history, law, architecture, and grassroots social work—this collection interrogates the dominant models of disability and critiques the systemic barriers that limit inclusion and empowerment. It brings together academic insight and lived narratives to explore key themes such as:
-
Disability models and their limitations
-
Diversity and inclusion in workplaces and education
-
Ethics of caregiving and familial responsibility
-
Capability deprivation and living arrangements
-
Autism advocacy in urban India
-
Gender, power, and sexuality in disability discourse
-
Livelihood experiences of disabled persons
-
The Disability Rights Movement and Disabled People’s Organizations in India
Through a nuanced combination of scholarly rigor and activist engagement, this book is a valuable resource for students and researchers in Disability Studies, Sociology, Development Studies, Mental Health, and Human Rights, as well as for policymakers and practitioners working in inclusive development.
