About Bengal Muslin – Handwoven in Nadia & Murshidabad:
Muslin is a closely woven, unbleached, or white cloth produced from carded cotton handspun yarn. It originated in Bengal and was introduced to Europe in the 17th century. Muslin is known for being suitable for hot, dry climates.
West Bengal produces around 55% of the muslin produced in India. The region is working to revive the fine muslin known worldwide, with efforts to spin and weave muslin of up to 500 count, which is comparable to the famous Bengal muslin. The process is labor-intensive and requires significant skill and patience.
The Project Muslin, launched by the West Bengal Government, aims to revive the weaving of high-quality muslin, with over 600 families in areas like Murshidabad, Nadia, Birbhum, Bardhaman, Hooghly, Malda, and Paschim Medinipur actively involved.
