About the Book
"Environmental Sociology: Classical Foundations, Contemporary Insights" offers an in-depth exploration of the relationship between society and the natural environment from a sociological perspective. This comprehensive work surveys classical and modern sociological theories, addressing critical issues and perspectives in environmental sociology today. The book delves into a wide array of topics such as globalization, ecological modernization, risk society, environmental movements, and cultural sociology of the environment.
The book examines various sociological theories, from Marxism to Durkheim’s legacy, and connects them with contemporary environmental concerns. Additionally, it explores significant debates in the field, such as ecological modernization versus the "limits" viewpoint and the intersection of modernity, politics, and the environment. Furthermore, it looks at the role of consumption, environmental identities, and the social construction of environmental problems.
Beyond cataloging existing theories, this text emphasizes the potential to forge new connections between environmental sociology and both classical and contemporary sociological theories. It serves as a critical resource for students and scholars interested in the relationship between society and the environment, offering both theoretical insights and practical applications.
