About the Book
This insightful volume provides a comprehensive exploration of notable earthquakes that have impacted India and its surrounding regions from historical times to the modern era. Covering seismic events such as the 1803 Uttarkashi, 1819 Kutch, 1897 Shillong, 1905 Kangra, 1934 Nepal-Bihar, 1950 Upper Assam, 1967 Koyna, 1993 Killari, 1997 Jabalpur, 2001 Bhuj, 2004 Sumatra-Andaman, 2005 Kashmir, and 2015 Nepal earthquakes, the book presents detailed analyses of their tectonic and geodynamic contexts.
Divided into three parts—Intra-Continental Earthquakes, Plate Boundary Earthquakes in the Northwest and Central Himalaya, and Plate Boundary Earthquakes in the Eastern Himalaya—the book delves into the seismotectonic characteristics, earthquake mechanisms, and the broader implications for future earthquake hazards in India. Each section provides case-based insights that enhance understanding of seismic risks and preparedness in the Indian subcontinent.
The authors skillfully connect modern scientific observations with historical earthquake data, using recent advancements in earthquake science to reinterpret past seismic events. This combination makes the book invaluable for seismologists, geologists, disaster management professionals, and students of earth sciences.
About the Authors
C.P. Rajendran is a renowned Indian geoscientist recognized for his pioneering work in tectonics and earthquake studies in India. With a career spanning prestigious institutions such as the Centre for Earth Science Studies, Indian Institute of Science, and the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, he has made significant contributions to understanding earthquake source zones in India. A recipient of the National Geoscience Award, he currently serves as an adjunct professor at the National Institute of Advanced Studies.
Kusala Rajendran, a distinguished Indian seismologist, has dedicated her career to studying seismic activity along India’s plate boundaries. With academic foundations from St. Teresa’s College, IIT Roorkee, and the University of South Carolina, she has held key positions at the Centre for Earth Sciences and Indian Institute of Science. Her accolades include the first National Award for Women Scientists from the Ministry of Earth Sciences, India. Together with C.P. Rajendran, she has advanced research in paleoseismology and active tectonics.
