About the Book
This book presents a thoroughly revised edition, English translation, and scholarly study of the Dharma Patanjala, an Old Javanese-Sanskrit Saiva scripture preserved in a 15th-century West Javanese palm-leaf codex. Part I introduces the cultural, doctrinal, codicological, and philological background of the text. Part II provides an annotated diplomatic edition with facsimile reproductions and a critical edition with English translation. Part III offers a systematic study of the doctrines taught in the Dharma Patanjala, comparing them with related Sanskrit texts from India and Old Javanese scriptures from Indonesia.
The text reflects a hybrid Saiva-Yoga system, adopting Patanjalaastangayoga within a Saiva doctrinal framework and documenting an early tradition of speculative texts (Tattva) previously known only through V?haspatitattva and Tattvajnana. This volume fills a significant gap in the understanding of Saiva theology and philosophy in pre-Islamic Indonesia and provides insight into the origins and development of Saivism in the Indian subcontinent.
A crucial resource for scholars, researchers, and students of Saiva and Buddhist Tantric traditions, Sanskrit and Old Javanese philology, Hindu philosophy, and the comparative religious history of South and Southeast Asia.
