About the Book
This study is an integral part of an all-India effort to examine the state of displacement caused by pre-planned development projects across the country since independence. The book specifically focuses on the nature, extent, and consequences of displacement due to development projects in Kerala between 1951 and 1995. An estimated 50 million people have been affected by these projects, and the consequences have been devastating for the poor, particularly those without proper resettlement or rehabilitation.
The book also critiques the inadequacy of the existing legal framework, primarily the Land Acquisition Act of 1894, which is heavily skewed against the interests of the poor and displaced. Through this research, the authors aim to raise national awareness about the human suffering caused by these development projects and advocate for policy changes that better protect the rights of the affected populations.
