About the Book

This authoritative volume by Dorothy N. Gamble and Marie Weil presents a wide-ranging and comprehensive framework for community practice in the 21st century. Drawing upon extensive professional experience and enriched with real-world case studies from around the globe, the authors introduce eight distinct community practice models tailored to specific contexts and goals.

Beginning with a solid foundation in the theories and values that drive community work—including social justice, human rights, and environmental sustainability—the book explores how foundational figures like Jane Addams, Martin Luther King Jr., Cesar Chavez, Wangari Maathai, and Vandana Shiva have influenced contemporary practice.

The book transitions into an in-depth exploration of eight practice models, illustrating their use through diverse international and domestic case examples. These models offer strategic approaches to community organizing, program development, social planning, coalition building, and movements for social change. Emphasizing critical thinking and contextual decision-making, the book empowers readers to select the most appropriate intervention method for any given scenario.

With its balance of theory, methodology, and application, this book serves as a crucial guide for students, practitioners, and academics engaged in community development and social work.
