Author Info:
Dr. E. Roer was a scholar whose work significantly contributed to the understanding of Vedic and Upanishadic texts. His research is especially noted for its exploration of the relationship between Vedic philosophy and the development of subsequent Indian spiritual thought.
Preface:
In this work, Dr. Roer discusses the chronology of the Old Testament and its influence on speculations regarding the dating of the Vedas and the Upanishads. While the precise dating remains uncertain, Roer argues that the Upanishads, particularly the principal ones, are not later than the Vedas. He contends that the apparent contradiction between the esoteric philosophy of the Upanishads and the nature worship in the Vedas can be reconciled when the Vedic Suktas are understood symbolically, pointing to a deeper philosophical tradition. Roer uses the example of world religions to show that a profound philosophy can coexist with popular religious practices, indirectly supporting the early origins of the Vedas and Upanishads.
