About the Book:
The discussion of Indian philosophy has been long and contentious. The social history of ancient India is still largely under research. As a result, the exact reasons and influences behind the emergence of such diverse philosophical schools in ancient India remain unclear. However, since the development of Indian philosophy was almost exclusively community-based, and since these communities originated in the distant past, Indian philosophy fundamentally merges ancient beliefs, myths, and ideas. Another point is that even when Indian philosophers reached a high level of intellectual development, they continued to accommodate these older beliefs in their thinking or were often very conscious about not dismissing them completely. Thus, what we see is a fusion of logical and, to a large extent, scientific thought with ancient superstitions. Furthermore, through ideological conflicts between various communities, Indian philosophy historically evolved. This book attempts to capture all of these discussions through the lens of a scientific interpretation of Indian cultural history. Debiprasad Chattopadhyay, a renowned Marxist theorist and a unique commentator on ancient Indian thought, challenges the current misinterpretation of Indian philosophy by the religious-political forces in India today.
