About the Book
This book addresses the pressing question of how the world’s largest population, India, will tackle its inequality challenges. By exploring the emerging health and gender geographies in India, it offers a comparative study of disparities and highlights the deep interconnections between health challenges and patriarchal features. It is the first book of its kind to examine gender and health imbalances in India through a detailed spatial and demographic lens.
Using data from the latest sociodemographic survey conducted between 2019-2021, the book provides a comprehensive Atlas of India, featuring district-level figures that visually represent the spatial patterns of gender and health inequalities. The text is structured around twenty chapters, each illustrated by 75 original maps, figures, and tables contributed by thirty authors. It covers a broad range of innovative topics, such as access to menstrual hygiene, cesarean deliveries, health insurance, son preference in fertility, female landownership, patrilocal systems, hypertension, anemia, hysterectomy, and the dynamics of girl-only or single-child families.
The chapters in this volume offer surprising insights into India’s current and future gender and health landscape. They illustrate the progress made over the last two decades while also pointing out the persistent gaps and emerging issues that need urgent attention.
