About The Book
Advaitamoda ("The Fragrance of Advaita") by Mahamahopadhyaya Vasudevasastri Abhyankar is a comprehensive work for those seeking a deep understanding of two major Vedanta traditions: Advaita Vedanta and Visistadvaita Vedanta. The book is structured into four chapters, where the first two focus on the teachings of Advaita Vedanta and Visistadvaita Vedanta respectively. The third and fourth chapters offer a detailed critique of Ramanuja's arguments against Advaita, found in the Laghu and Mahasiddhanta sections of his seminal work, Sri Bhasya. The author systematically presents passages from the Sri Bhasya, followed by critical discussions, enabling readers to understand the foundational differences between these two Vedanta schools.

Dr. Michael Comans, a scholar from the Australian National University, has translated this important text from Sanskrit to English. His translation is accompanied by a detailed commentary, enriching the work with explanations that clarify and elaborate on complex topics. This makes the Advaitamoda an invaluable resource for students of Indian philosophy and those particularly interested in Vedanta traditions.

The book also includes an introduction, a detailed table of contents, the Sanskrit text of Advaitamoda, and an index, making it an accessible and thorough guide for those studying the text. The foreword is by Professor J.V. de Jong, offering further insight into the significance of this work in the context of Vedanta scholarship.

About the Author
Dr. Michael Comans (M.A., Dip. Ed., Ph.D.) is a prominent scholar of Advaita Vedanta, with years of study in both Western and Indian traditions. He completed his M.A. in religious studies at the University of Sydney before immersing himself in Advaita Vedanta and Sanskrit studies in the United States and India. Under the guidance of Swami Dayananda Sarasvati in Rishikesh, India, he studied key Vedanta texts such as the Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, and Brahmasutras, alongside the commentaries of Sankaracarya. Dr. Comans earned his Ph.D. from the Australian National University in 1986 under Professor J.W. de Jong's guidance. His expertise in both traditional and modern scholarship enables him to provide insightful translations and commentaries, making significant contributions to the field of Vedanta studies.

The Advaitamoda is the first major publication in his career, and Dr. Comans continues to contribute to Vedanta studies with a focus on translating and interpreting key texts of this philosophical tradition.
