In every era, the Imams of the religion have performed the service of explaining and clarifying the Book of Allah so that the common people do not face any difficulty or obstacle in understanding the Book of Allah. Since the time of the righteous predecessors, the interpretation of the Quran was divided into the methods of interpretation of the Quran, interpretation of the Mathur, and interpretation of the opinion. During the time of the Companions (may Allah have mercy on them), the great followers, and the followers of the followers, may Allah have mercy on them all, Tafsir of the Mathur was very important and was considered the original type of interpretation. Tafsir of the Mathur is also called Tafsir of the transmitted because in it the Book of Allah is interpreted from the Quran itself or the hadiths or the sayings of the Companions or the sayings of the followers and followers of the followers. Some commentators include Tafsir along with Israa’iliyah in Tafsir of the Mathur because it is a form of transmission from the People of the Book. This is why Israa’iliyah is found in large numbers in our ancient exegetical collection. The methodology of this interpretation of Imam Ibn Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him, who died in 774 AH) is also Tafsir of the Mathur. The Imam (may Allah have mercy on him) interpreted the Book of Allah from the Holy Quran, authentic hadiths, the sayings of the companions and followers, and the Isra’iliyat, although in some places he also interprets it by opinion, but this is very rare. Tafsir al-Tabari is considered the first basic book written on the methodology of Tafsir al-Mathur. Some scholars believe that Tafsir Ibn Kathir is a summary of Tafsir al-Tabari. This Tafsir by Imam Ibn Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) has been a reference and source among the elite and the common people in every era, because it is a Tafsir al-Mathur, although the Imam (may Allah have mercy on him) has also quoted many weak and subject traditions or fabricated Isra’iliyat in his Tafsir, as was the general methodology and attitude of the commentators of the Middle Ages. After publishing several Arabic editions of ‘Tafsir Ibn Kathir’, the Dar al-Salam Institute published its Tafsir under the title ‘Al-Misbah al-Munir fi Tahdhib Tafsir Ibn Kathir’. This work was done under the supervision of Maulana Safi ur-Rahman Mubarakpuri and Hafiz Abdul Matin Rashid, etc. Then the institution arranged to transfer the same civilization into the Urdu format which is now before you. The Urdu translation duties have been done by Maulana Muhammad Khalid Saif. The translation is very good, fluent and in accordance with the standards of Dar-ul-Salam.
