1982 takes place on the night of July 6, 1982, during the century's longest lunar eclipse. Near the industrial town of Baninagar, on the mysterious Kalidah riverbank, four young boys and girls are found unconscious the following morning after disappearing that evening. At the same time, their close friend, a young astrophysicist named Ranjay Karmakar, goes missing. Rumors had been circulating all week that the device Ranjay had been working on might have been intended for espionage purposes.

As the mystery deepens, the four children refuse to talk about what happened that night after regaining consciousness. On the brink of adolescence, they understand that the rest of their lives will be spent mourning the loss of their dear friend, Ranjay, in the same way as their childhood memories.

Thirty-nine years later, the three remaining friends, now middle-aged, hear that Ranjay had returned in 1992, living in seclusion. Upon his death from COVID-19, he leaves behind a mysterious blueprint for another device, possibly a time machine.
