About the Author

Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay was born on November 2, 1935, in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Raised in a nomadic environment due to his father’s railway job, Shirshendu’s early life was filled with diverse experiences across various parts of India. He spent his childhood in places like Bihar, Assam, North Bengal, and East Bengal. His memories of his early life, especially from Cooch Behar, significantly influenced his writing, and many of these themes recur throughout his works.

Shirshendu pursued his education at Victoria College and later Calcutta University, where he earned both his B.A. and M.A. degrees. Starting his career as a schoolteacher, he later moved into journalism, working with prominent publications like Anandabazar Patrika. His first short story appeared in the ‘Desh’ magazine, and his first novel, ‘Ghuno Poka’ (The Termite), marked the beginning of his literary journey. He later became famous for his children's novels, winning the Vidyasagar Award in 1985 for excellence in children's literature.

In 1989, he received the Sahitya Akademi Award for his novel ‘Manabzamin’. His works, both for adults and children, have made him one of the most distinguished figures in Bengali literature. Despite his own doubts and introspection, his characters carry the message of love, compassion, and faith.

Shirshendu’s works have left an indelible mark on Bengali literature, and his philosophical explorations into love, loss, and human resilience continue to resonate with readers worldwide.
