About the Author
Sunil Gangopadhyay was born on 7 September 1934 (21 Bhadra 1341) in Faridpur, Bangladesh, and was educated in Calcutta University where he earned his MA. His early career began with tutoring and evolved through a variety of professions, including insurance, UNESCO, and government service. Gangopadhyay also served as the editor of the literary magazine ‘Krittibas’, a platform that played a pivotal role in Bengali literature during its time.
He started writing poetry, eventually branching out into novels. His first novel, ‘Atmaprakash’, published in the ‘Desh’ magazine, marked his transition from poetry to prose. His debut poetry collection, ‘Eka Ebong Koyekjon’, was well-received. Throughout his career, he received many awards, including the Ananda Award, Bankim Puraskar (1983), and the Sahitya Akademi Award (1985).
Gangopadhyay wrote under the pen name ‘Neel Lohit’ and also used the names ‘Sanatan Pathak’ and ‘Neel Upadhyay’. His writing style is marked by lyrical beauty, poignant emotional depth, and a keen understanding of the human condition. He passed away on 23 October 2012, leaving behind a treasure trove of works that continue to influence and inspire readers.
