About the Author
Bimal Kar was born on 3 Ashwin 1328 (1921) in Jabalpur, India. His childhood was spent in various places including Hazaribagh, Gomoh, Dhanbad, and Asansol. He completed his education at Calcutta University and began his professional career in 1942 with the ARP and later at the Railway Department. Kar’s literary career saw him serve as an associate editor of the ‘Parag’ magazine and later work as an editor for publications like ‘Satyajug’ and ‘Pashchimbanga’.
He worked with ‘Desh’ weekly from 1954 to 1982 and was the editor of the ‘Shiladitya’ monthly between 1982-1984. Kar received numerous prestigious awards, including the Ananda Puraskar (1967 & 1992), Sahitya Akademi Award (1975), and the Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay Award from Calcutta University (1981). Known for his advocacy of ‘New Method in Short Story’, Kar's literary contributions have been pivotal in shaping modern Bengali fiction.
Kar passed away on 26 August 2003, leaving behind an unparalleled legacy in Bengali literature, marked by a unique ability to delve into the minds and hearts of his characters.
