About the Author
Sunil Gangopadhyay was born on 7 September 1934 in Faridpur, Bangladesh. He completed his Master's degree in Bengali from Calcutta University and began his career in various jobs, including as an officer trainee at an insurance company and as a staff member at UNESCO. Later, he worked as a clerk in a government office and as a section editor for a now-defunct daily newspaper.
His literary journey began with poetry, and he went on to found the literary magazine ‘Krittibas’, which played an important role in Bengali poetry. Gangopadhyay’s first novel, ‘Atmaprakash’, was published in the Sharadiya edition of Desh magazine. His first poetry collection was ‘Eka O Kichhu Jan’, and he is equally renowned for his contributions to children’s literature.
Among his numerous honors, Gangopadhyay received the Ananda Award, the Benkim Puraskar in 1983, and the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award in 1985. He wrote under the pen names Nil Lohit, Sonatan Pathak, and Nil Upadhyay.
Sunil Gangopadhyay passed away on 23 October 2012, leaving behind a significant legacy in Bengali literature. He remains one of the most influential voices of modern Bengali literature, celebrated for his depth, breadth, and innovation in storytelling.
