About the Author

Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay was born on 2nd November 1935 in Dhaka District, Bikrampur, Bangladesh. His early years were spent in a nomadic life, moving across various regions due to his father's job with the railways. His diverse experiences shaped his literary perspective and fueled his imagination, which later found expression in his writing.

Mukhopadhyay's literary journey began in 1950s Bengal, where he attended Victoria College in Cooch Behar and completed his education at Calcutta University. After starting as a school teacher, he later transitioned to journalism, joining the Anandabazar Patrika. His literary career was also marked by his early works in children's literature.

His first novel, ‘Ghunpoka’, marked the beginning of his significant contribution to Bengali literature. Mukhopadhyay is also widely acclaimed for his children's books, with the ‘Manojder Adbhut Bari’ being one of his iconic works.

Over the years, he has received numerous prestigious accolades, including the Vidyasagar Puraskar (1985), the Ananda Puraskar, and the Sahitya Akademi Award (1989) for his novel ‘Manabajamin’. His storytelling is known for its philosophical depth, humanism, and emotional resonance, with a focus on ordinary people’s extraordinary lives.

His works continue to be widely read, and he is considered one of the most important figures in Bengali literature.
