About the Author

Sunil Gangopadhyay was born on 7th September 1934 in Faridpur, Bangladesh. He completed his MA in Bengali Literature from Calcutta University, marking the beginning of a career that would span multiple genres, from poetry to novels and short stories.

Gangopadhyay began his literary career as a poet, founding the influential Krittibas magazine. His poetry earned him recognition, but he soon turned to novels and became one of Bengal's most celebrated authors. His first novel, โ€˜Atmaprakashโ€™, was published in Sharadiya Desh and marked the start of his influential presence in the literary world.

In addition to his literary accomplishments, Gangopadhyay held various professional roles, including serving as a section officer in the government and working for UNESCO in adult education. His works span diverse subjects, addressing complex issues like identity, social norms, and personal relationships with both humor and gravitas.

He was awarded numerous prestigious awards, including the Bunkim Puraskar in 1983, the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1985, and the Ananda Puraskar for his literary contributions. Known by the pen names Neel Lohit, Sanatan Pathak, and Neel Upadhyay, he became an iconic figure in Bengali literature, deeply loved and respected for his literary versatility and his ability to capture the pulse of contemporary Bengali society.
