Book Description
The sixth volume of Upanyas Samagra by Bimal Kar is a collection of three compelling novels that offer an in-depth exploration of human emotions, societal struggles, and historical events. The novels within this volume touch upon different themes, from the impact of World War II on the psyche of people to the nuanced relationships that define human nature.
The first novel, "Deewal" (The Wall), is a reflection on the devastation caused by the Second World War. Written after a long gap following the war, Bimal Kar presents the story of an unnamed narrator whose experiences and trauma from that period echo throughout the narrative. The novel's impact was so significant that it is often regarded as one of the finest works in Bengali literature.
"Shamik" presents a nihilistic approach to life, addressing the struggles of modern individuals within the fabric of society. The story delves into the intricate complexities of relationships, including family ties, societal expectations, and individual identity, capturing the essence of existentialism in a Bengali context.
The third novel, "Granthy", is a touching portrayal of the complex relationship between a mother and her son. Through the character of an actress, the novel explores the emotional weight of love, hate, and attachment, making it one of Bimal Kar’s most emotional and reflective works.
