About the Author

Shyarsendu Mukhopadhyay was born on 2nd November 1935 in Dhaka, Bangladesh (then East Bengal). His childhood was marked by constant relocation, owing to his father's work in the railways, which took him across various regions of India. His early years were spent in Kolkata, Bihar, North Bengal, and Assam. These experiences deeply influenced his writing, which often draws upon the themes of displacement, nostalgia, and identity.

Mukhopadhyay pursued his education at Victoria College and later at Calcutta University, where he completed his M.A. After starting his career as a school teacher, he turned to journalism, joining Anandabazar Patrika. His first story was published in Desh Magazine, and his first novel, ‘Ghunpoka’, was later followed by his beloved children’s book, ‘Manojder Adbhut Bari’.

Mukhopadhyay has received numerous accolades for his literary contributions, including the Bidyasagar Puraskar (1985) for excellence in children's literature, the Ananda Puraskar, and the Sahitya Akademi Award (1989) for his novel ‘Manabzamin’.

Through his wide-ranging works, he has become one of the most influential voices in modern Bengali literature, respected for his unique narrative voice, his ability to capture the inner workings of the human soul, and his unparalleled sensitivity towards human relationships.
