Book Description
In the 1960s, when poet Sunil Gangopadhyay was writing his first novel "Jubak-Jubati", without any immediate urge to publish, Bengali literature was undergoing a transformation. The traditional romance-driven narratives were being replaced by introspective and existential themes, where characters sought meaning beyond societal norms. Sunil himself termed this shift as "unexplained restlessness", reflecting the existential struggles of his characters. His novel "Atmaprakash" marked his emergence as a major novelist, breaking boundaries and expanding the landscape of Bengali fiction.
Sunil Gangopadhyay became an institution in Bengali literature, known for his mastery over storytelling, intricate characterization, deep social consciousness, and philosophical inquiries. His works brought a fresh artistic dimension to Bengali novels, making him a defining figure in modern literature.
This fourth volume of Upanyas Samagra features five significant novels:
- Janaranye Ekjon (A Man in the Crowd) – A gripping exploration of urban loneliness.
- Hirak Dipti (The Radiance of Diamonds) – A novel filled with suspense and deep emotions.
- Tomar-Amar (Yours and Mine) – A story about relationships and personal conflicts.
- Swarger Niche Manush (People Beneath Heaven) – A philosophical take on human existence.
- Eka Ebong Koyekjon (Alone and a Few Others) – A beautifully woven narrative of solitude and companionship.
