Details: Samkhya is one of the oldest systems of Indian Philosophy and Kapila is the founder of this system. The Samkhyakarika of Isvarakrsna is the most celebrated Samkhya text. The Samkhyakarika of Isvarakrsna, being the earliest available text book on the Samkhya system has attracted serious attention from ancient and modern scholars and as a result, several commentaries, translations and studies on the work are available. In the search, after the cause of of the visible world, the classical Samkhya does not go beyond prakriti and accept a God or any transcendental being. But from stray references found in earlier literature, it is clear that there was the istic Samkhya accepting a power beyond prakrti and controlling the process of evolution. Among later writers on the Samkhya, Vijnanabhikshu upheld such a view in his commentary on the Samkhya sutras, a work later than the Samkhyakarika, but ascribed to the legendary founder of the system Kapila. But to my knowledge, there has been no metaphysical interpretation of Isvarakrsnas Samkhyakarika and under the circumstances any attempt to comment on the Samkhya deserves attention.
