About the Book
In an era dominated by globalisation, where capital, people, goods, and ideas move fluidly across borders, this volume offers a critical and multidimensional perspective on its socio-cultural impacts. Rather than viewing globalisation solely as a top-down economic movement from the global North to South, this collection emphasizes the deeply historical and reciprocal nature of global interactions, including the oft-ignored “globalisation from below.”
Drawing on a wide range of disciplinary insights, this book brings together 23 chapters from eminent scholars to explore how globalisation intersects with diverse facets of Indian society—such as poverty, education, health, gender, cinema, tribal communities, and urban slums. The volume includes a compelling foreword by Prof. Yogendra Singh, who emphasizes the need to reconsider conventional narratives and recognize the bottom-up forces shaping global change.
With accessible language and insightful analysis, the chapters range from theoretical explorations to case studies, making this book suitable not just for researchers and students, but also for policymakers and general readers interested in understanding the socio-cultural fabric of our globalising world. Topics covered include the shrinking sovereignty of the state in health policy, changing family structures, the evolution of Hindi cinema, diaspora dynamics, and the condition of agricultural labourers in a liberalized economy.
By grounding global processes in local contexts, and highlighting voices from the margins, this book challenges mainstream discourses and contributes fresh thinking to the ongoing debates on globalisation. It is a valuable addition to the scholarship on global change, development, and cultural transformation in contemporary India.
