About the Book
Sociology and Sociologists in India: Perspectives from the North-West offers a comprehensive descriptive inquiry combined with critical analysis on the emergence, development, and current state of sociology as a discipline in North-West India. While mainstream sociological discourse often emphasizes national and international narratives, this volume draws attention to regional contributions that are equally essential for the construction of sociological concepts, theories, and methodologies.
India's rich sociocultural and geographical diversity demands exploration at the regional level to uncover the depth of indigenous sociological thought. In this context, the book focuses on the academic work of sociologists from the North-West region—specifically from Chandigarh (UT), Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir.
The book is structured into four major sections aligned with the scholars’ key thematic interests:
-
Development and Modernisation
-
Urban Studies
-
Dalit Studies
-
Social Movements and Political Sociology
Additionally, the initial chapters provide a broad overview of development and transformation in the region and trace the emergence of sociology within North-West Indian universities.
