About the Book
"Marriage and Family: Changing Institutions" examines the evolution of two fundamental societal institutions: marriage and family. These institutions are adapting to meet the changing needs and demands of society, influenced by socio-economic, demographic, and technological shifts. While marriage and family have been widely studied by sociologists, social anthropologists, and demographers, few have explored these changes from the perspective of family demography. This book fills that gap by focusing on how these changes affect family formation, reproductive behavior, and the values surrounding marriage and family life in India.
Through this anthology, the book tackles essential questions such as: What kinds of changes are taking place in the institution of marriage? How important is marriage for the younger generations in India? What are the prevailing views on childbearing and family formation? Additionally, the text explores how socio-demographic changes are challenging and transforming these institutions. While some changes in marriage practices have occurred, unlike in Western societies, marriage continues to be crucial for family formation in India. In the future, both marriage and family will face new challenges as gender and sexual revolutions potentially influence these institutions in diverse Indian societies.
The anthology features contributions from various experts, offering valuable insights into different facets of marriage and family in the Indian context.
