About the Book
This book explores the development and evolution of social movements in India, reflecting the collective efforts of people to address the issues of their time. It discusses the origins, challenges, and outcomes of various social movements, with a historical and regional perspective. The study brings to light the dynamic nature of these movements, revealing that even communities considered uneducated or primitive played a significant role in igniting social consciousness and leading various causes.
The book also sheds light on how social movements are a response to societal issues and how they evolve over time, making a crucial contribution to social change. It provides an in-depth look at key movements like the Bhakti Movement, Peasant Movements, Tribal Movements, the Naxalite Movement, Dalit Movements, and the Women’s Movement. It highlights the ideological foundations of these movements and their impact on Indian society, while offering a sociological viewpoint that invites further research.
The study of social movements is done on both theoretical and regional levels, showing how, despite different regions and languages, the concerns, struggles, and ideas of the people have remained largely similar across India. This book will be especially valuable and interesting for students of sociology and those with an interest in social movements.
