About the Book
India is one of the world’s major theatres of both natural and human-induced disasters. With its diverse geo-climatic conditions and socio-economic vulnerabilities, the country ranks among the most disaster-prone in the world. Over the last three decades, India has witnessed 431 major disasters, resulting in significant loss of life and property. Among these, Uttarakhand stands out as a region particularly vulnerable to floods, droughts, cyclones, earthquakes, landslides, avalanches, and forest fires.
The newly created state of Uttarakhand, with a large portion of its territory under the Himalayan ecosystem, faces the constant threat of natural disasters, particularly earthquakes, flash floods, landslides, and forest fires. The flash flood and landslide that struck in June 2013 devastated the state's economy and infrastructure. This book examines the imperative need for sustainable and socially responsible development in the region, particularly in light of rampant urbanization, deforestation, unregulated tourism, and hydropower project constructions, all of which contribute to the growing disaster risks.
This study focuses on the theoretical perspectives of natural disasters, their prevention, and the mitigation of associated risks, particularly in the context of Uttarakhand. It highlights the vulnerability and risks facing the state and the vital role of Sulabh International Social Service Organisation in rehabilitating disaster-affected areas, specifically in Dewali village, Rudraprayag district. The book also provides an in-depth analysis of the widows affected by the 2013 disaster and their rehabilitation.
A central theme of the book is the need for sustainable development that strikes a balance between ecology, environment, and growth. Policymakers are called to address crucial issues for preventing and mitigating natural disasters, ensuring a safer future for the people of Uttarakhand.
