About the Book:
This book explores the concept of sustainable development, which has its early roots in the development-environment debate. The debate began with the adoption of the economic growth model by many countries and the realization of its negative consequences in the form of environmental degradation. The United Nations established the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED) in 1983 to address the critical environment and development issues and to ensure human progress is sustained without depleting resources for future generations.
In 1987, the Our Common Future report defined sustainable development as development that meets present needs without compromising future generations' ability to meet their needs. This book is based on papers presented at a national seminar in India and covers various concepts, approaches, experiences in sustainable development, and the role of NGOs.
The book is aimed at disseminating knowledge and data on sustainable development issues, offering diverse perspectives on the subject from a variety of fields.
