About the Book
Global Social Movements by Shirin M. Rai offers a compelling and wide-ranging analysis of the transformative power of social movements in an increasingly globalised world. As corporations and economic giants shape global systems from above, resistance and advocacy are taking shape from below—through the emergence of dynamic global social movements.
This scholarly work sheds light on how globalisation is reshaping the nature of political activism. While nation-states still hold relevance, we are entering a post-national era, where unconventional, direct, and participatory forms of action are taking root. The book explores how a new global consciousness is forming, rooted in grassroots efforts and social justice.
Covering diverse movements—human rights, women’s rights, environmental, religious, labour, and peace—the book provides a systematic and inclusive overview of global social activism. It highlights the interplay between local realities and global forces, making it a vital resource for students, academics, and anyone interested in political science, global studies, and social change.
