About the Book

This volume presents, for the very first time in English, the devotional essence (bhāvārtha) of Śrī Subodhinī, the revered Sanskrit commentary of Mahāprabhu Śrī Vallabhāchārya on the Śrīmad Bhāgavata Mahāpurāṇa. This sacred translation is grounded in pure bhakti (devotion) and covers the heart of the Bhāgavata—the Tenth Canto, which is especially revered in the Vaiṣṇava tradition for its vivid depiction of Lord Krishna’s divine līlās.

Śrī Subodhinī stands as one of the most comprehensive and authoritative commentaries on the Bhāgavata. It exemplifies Vallabhacharya’s philosophical depth and devotional fervor, unfolding layer by layer the spiritual significance of each verse. This English edition encompasses:

  • The original Bhāgavata Ślokas in Sanskrit

  • Their English translations

  • The Sanskrit text of Śrī Subodhinī

  • The English translation of Śrī Subodhinī

  • Additional references from allied commentaries by revered scholars such as Śrī Viṭṭhalnāthajī (Gosāinjī), Śrī Vallabhajī, Śrī Lālū Bhaṭṭajī, and Śrī Puruṣottamajī

The chapters included in this volume are selected from the Tenth Canto and focus on:

  1. The story of King Nṛga

  2. Lord Balarāma’s visit to Vraja

  3. The slaying of Pauṇḍraka and the King of Kāśī

  4. The death of the demon Dvivida

  5. The humiliation of the Kauravas and Sāmba’s marriage

  6. Sage Nārada’s vision of Krishna’s domestic life

  7. Krishna’s daily schedule and the visit of the envoy from Jarāsandha’s prison

Translator’s Insight

The English translation and devotional exposition have been prepared by T. Rāmanan, a devotee from the Śrī Sampradāya of Śrī Rāmānujāchārya. Inspired by Śrī Śyām Manohar Goswāmījī, a direct descendant of Mahāprabhu Śrī Vallabhāchārya, this work aims to make the divine nectar of Śrī Subodhinī accessible to English readers while maintaining its original devotional purity. Rāmanan humbly regards his work as a small offering, blessed by the divine will and the grace of his gurus.

About the Author

Mahāprabhu Śrī Vallabhāchārya (1479–1532 CE), the founder of Puṣṭimārga (The Path of Grace), is recognized as one of the five great Acharyas of the Bhakti movement. Considered an incarnation of Agni (fire), he was a spiritual genius and master interpreter of Vedantic texts. Through his works—Subodhinī, Tatvārtha Dīpa Nibandha, Siddhānta Rahasya, and others—he revived the philosophy of divine grace and selfless devotion.

Śrī Vallabhāchārya taught that bhakti should be filled with sweetness (mādhurya) and intimacy with the Divine. His teachings remain foundational for the Vaiṣṇava tradition, particularly among the followers of Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa in his Vraja līlā form.
