About Kantha

Kantha embroidery, known for its intricate and beautiful stitches, is a Geographical Indication (GI) product of Bengal. It originated about a thousand years ago as embroidered quilts used to keep babies warm, and over time, evolved into an art form. The Kantha stitch now creates delicate lines, motifs, and patterns on a variety of textiles.

Biswa Bangla has worked closely with thousands of women artisans in the Birbhum district, focusing on design improvements and product diversification. This collaboration has revived the traditional Kantha stitch on silk and cotton textiles, along with home furnishings, resulting in better income and opportunities for women to improve their quality of life, including education, health, and sanitation.

Colour, Texture & Wash Care Information

  • General: Colour and texture may slightly vary from what is shown in the photograph due to the handmade nature of the fabric.

  • Wash Care: Dry clean only.

  • Embroidery: Slight irregularities are typical of handwoven, hand-embroidered, or handcrafted items. These minor variations enhance the uniqueness and charm of the product, making it different from machine-made items.

  • Handwoven: Missing yarn, slobs, and uneven yarn contrasts are natural occurrences in handwoven textiles, adding to the distinct beauty of the fabric.
