About Kantha
The Kantha embroidery is a Geographical Indication (GI) product of Bengal, representing the creativity of women. Originating as embroidered quilts used to keep babies warm, Kantha has evolved into a full-fledged art form. Its motifs, lines, and patterns are embroidered on various textiles, including sarees. Biswa Bangla has collaborated with thousands of craftswomen in Birbhum district to revitalize the Kantha stitch, now used in silk and cotton textiles, as well as home furnishing products. This initiative has helped improve the livelihoods of the artisans, enabling them to invest in education, nutrition, health, and better sanitation.
