Description:

This book is an English translation of 565 songs by one of the greatest musician-saints, Tyagaraja. The compositions are originally in Sanskrit. The translator, C. Ramanujachariar, sought to take these songs, which embody the trials, yearnings, religious fervor, and devotional experiences of Tyagaraja, beyond southern India.

The songs are classified into two charts, with an index provided in both Sanskrit and English. The preface and introductory thesis (covering two-thirds of the book) are written by V. Raghavan, a Sanskrit scholar and musicologist. The foreword is written by S. Radhakrishnan, the vice-president of India at the time.

Ramanujachariar, who was also an administrator, actor, musician, and spiritual seeker, was well-known as the Secretary of the Ramakrishna Mission Students Home, Chennai. V. Raghavan, a recipient of the Padma Bhushan, authored over 120 books and contributed immensely to Sanskrit and musicology.

This book is a valuable resource for English-speaking readers eager to familiarize themselves with the timeless songs of Tyagaraja, which present lofty truths in simple, appealing language. It is also a valuable reference for students of Carnatic music.
