About the Book
This book explores the concept of the Tamil Veda as the canonical scripture for the Srivaisnava community of South India. Challenging the commonly accepted historical narrative, it argues that the story of the loss of the Tamil Veda and its recovery by Nathamuni in the 9th or 10th century appears only in 17th-century texts.
The work further demonstrates that there were two distinct canons: initially, the works of Nammalvar, especially the Tiruvaymoli, formed the prevailing canon until the early 17th century; later, the 4000 verses of the Alvars emerged as the new canonical corpus. This study provides a critical and historical understanding of religious texts, their transmission, and their evolving role in South Indian Hindu traditions, making it a valuable resource for scholars, students, and readers interested in Tamil history, Srivaisnava literature, and religious studies.
