Book Description
These lecture notes are based on the course Michael Atiyah gave at Harvard in the fall of 1964. They provide a self-contained account of vector bundles and K-theory, requiring only basic knowledge of point-set topology and linear algebra. The treatment avoids the use of ordinary homology or cohomology theory and introduces rational cohomology in terms of K-theory.
The notes cover the solution to the Hopf invariant problem and offer a start on the J-homomorphism. Additionally, two papers by Atiyah published after 1964 are included at the end: one supplementing Chapter III with an alternative approach to operations, and the other presenting a new approach to K-theory.
