About the Author:

Sunil Gangopadhyay (September 7, 1934 – October 23, 2012) was one of the most celebrated Bengali writers and poets. Born in Faridpur, Bangladesh, he was a versatile figure in Bengali literature, excelling as a poet, novelist, and editor. He was a graduate of Calcutta University with a Master's degree in Arts. His career began in various jobs, including working as an officer trainee at an insurance company, a UNESCO worker for adult education, and later as a department editor for a now-defunct daily newspaper.

Gangopadhyay began his literary journey with poetry and gained fame as the founder-editor of the prestigious literary magazine Krittibas. Later, he ventured into novel writing, with his first novel Atmaprakash (Autobiography) published in Sharadiya Desh magazine. His first poetry collection, Eka O Kichu Jan, was also widely acclaimed.

Gangopadhyay’s popularity wasn’t just limited to adults; his works for children were equally loved. He was a recipient of several prestigious awards, including the Bunkim Puraskar in 1983 and the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1985.

His pseudonym, Neel Lohit, as well as Sanatan Pathak and Neel Upadhyay, was widely used across different genres. His death in 2012 marked the end of an era in Bengali literature.
