Bani Basu was born on 26th Falgun, 1346 (Bengali Calendar) and pursued her education in Kolkata. She studied English Literature, completing her M.A. from the University of Calcutta in 1962. She later worked as a professor at Howrah Bijoykrishna Girls’ College.

From her student days, she was involved in writing essays, short stories, poetry, and translations. Some of her notable translations include:
