Book Description:

Aynamahal is a deeply introspective novel by Suchitra Bhattacharya that explores complex human relationships, inner conflicts, and the struggles of existence.

  • The central character, Dibyajyoti Singh, is a renowned artist and a man who seeks to live life on his own terms.
  • He was married to Pritha, but their marriage ended. However, a subtle bond still lingers between them.
  • Dibyajyoti engages in multiple relationships, including with relatives, acquaintances, and even a domestic worker, yet remains emotionally detached.
  • His only true connection is with his mother, though neither of them is financially dependent on the other.
  • At the peak of his career, he establishes an institution called "Subarnalata" to support underprivileged women through handicrafts, entrusting its management to Kalpana and Sukhen.
  • But life takes an unexpected turn—Dibyajyoti suffers a cerebral stroke, leaving him physically disabled.
  • As he struggles to reclaim his life, he searches for Pritha once more.
  • Will he succeed in rebuilding himself, or is he destined to fade away?

Through Aynamahal, Suchitra Bhattacharya paints a poignant picture of human aspirations, detachment, and the fragility of relationships.
