- Born: 2 November 1935, Dhaka, Bikrampur (now in Bangladesh)
- Education: Vicky College (IA), Kolkata College (BA), Kolkata University (Postgraduate)
- Career: Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay's childhood was marked by a wandering life due to his father's job in the railway. He lived in several places including Kolkata, Bihar, North Bengal, East Bengal, and Assam. He began his career in teaching, later transitioning to journalism with Anandabazar Patrika. His first novel was Ghumpoka, and his first children's novel was Monojder Adbhut Bari.
