About the Book

Aansoo is a unique work of Jaishankar Prasad. Its first edition was published in 1925 by Sahitya Sadan, Chirgaon, Jhansi. The second edition was published in 1933 by Bharti Bhandar, Prayag. The composition period of ‘Aansoo’ is approximately 1923-24. It is said that initially the poet had the idea of presenting it under ‘Kamayani’, but due to its excessive lyricism and not being much in line with the epic poem, he abandoned this idea.

Difference in Versions
There is a considerable difference between the two versions of ‘Aansoo’. The first version had only 126 verses. Its tone was extremely pessimistic and can be called a tragic composition. The poet made several amendments in the new version. The number of verses increased to 190, and a tone of hope and faith was presented in it. The poet also made changes in the outline of some verses, and the verses were placed in such a sequence that it gave the impression of a story.

Narrative Elements
‘Aansoo’ is a great creation of songs, in which Prasad’s personal life experience has been expressed. Despite many efforts, it is difficult to say with certainty about the inspiration of this poem, but it is indisputable that there is definitely a love story at its root. In ‘Aansoo’, the poet has directly made a request to his beloved. The poet’s personality has been expressed so touchingly in this poem as in no other.
