Summary:
Language is always evolving, with changes touching spelling, word usage, and meanings. Grammar and usage do not always go hand in hand. While grammar might deem certain things incorrect, usage sometimes grants them approval. In any language, grammar has been developing for a long time, but books on usage are relatively recent. In English, the Fowler brothers’ work on usage dictionaries in the 19th century marked the beginning. However, in Bengali, there was no comprehensive work on usage until Subhash Bhattacharya wrote the first book on the subject. Published in 1984, it created a stir in the literary world. Though titled a dictionary, it is actually a discussion-based book that explores the nuances of spelling, meaning, and usage in Bengali. It provides numerous examples from Bengali literature, making it an invaluable resource for educated Bengali speakers. The updated and expanded edition of this book, published nineteen years after its original release, continues to offer fresh insights.
