It originated over a thousand years ago as embroidered quilts used to keep babies warm. Today, Kantha is a full-fledged art, where embroidery creates intricate lines, motifs, and patterns on various textiles.

Biswa Bangla has worked alongside thousands of artisans in the Birbhum district to improve designs and diversify products. This partnership has led to the reintroduction of Kantha stitching on silk and cotton fabrics, boosting the income of artisans and improving their quality of life. The increased income has helped these women invest in education, healthcare, nutrition, and better sanitation.
