About Kantha

The Kantha embroidery, a Geographical Indication (GI) product of Bengal, symbolizes women’s creativity and has evolved from being embroidered quilts used to keep babies warm to a full-fledged art form. Over time, Kantha has adorned various textiles, including sarees, with its delicate and rich embroidery patterns. Biswa Bangla has collaborated with thousands of craftswomen from Birbhum district to revitalize and diversify the Kantha stitch into silk and cotton textiles. This initiative has helped these women gain financial independence, improve their livelihoods, and support better education, health, and nutrition.
