About Jamdani Sarees
Jamdani sarees are known for their vibrant colours, intricate patterns, and rich motifs. Handwoven in the districts of Nadia and Bardhaman, Bengal, approximately 1,000 skilled weavers and 2,000 ancillary artisans carry forward this time-consuming and labor-intensive craft. Depending on the design complexity, weaving a Jamdani saree can take anywhere from 3 months to a year.
However, due to the demanding nature of this work, many weavers migrated to other more lucrative professions. With Biswa Bangla’s efforts in market linkage, design innovation, and product diversification, weavers’ incomes have increased, leading to a reverse migration and a revival of the craft. The Jamdani sarees are now available in silk, linen, and cotton-silk blends, as well as in various products like scarves, pocket squares, sarees, and shawls.
