Details: Indian form of the division of society into classes appeared as a social order, caste in form but class in content. It played the same role in India as slavery did in ancient Greece. This argument is an inspiration to every student of Indian history of probe into the history of ancient India, particularly of the age of Rigveda, which is the first literary monument of ancient human culture. The present study is an attempt to study the Rig Vedic age analyzing its class structure. It contests the prevalent view that Indian tradition is strange to the concept of class division. The internal evidences occurring in the Rigveda itself prove the fact that the class structure is applicable also to ancient Indian social scenario. Our tradition is not essentially spiritualistic in content. It is based on naturalistic and materialistic character. Its world-view was neither negative nor life-denying. It was full of enthusiastic joy of living and active interest in promotion life. Enjoyment of life in its fullness was their highest goal.
