Synopsis:
The 1970s—a time preparing to embrace the fire of change. Before that, one morning, a knock on the door at the doctor's quarters of a government hospital altered little Jessie's life forever. Leaving behind a postcard-perfect life of school, Sunday morning movies, circus outings, and long vacations to Haridwar or Puri with her father, Ashish Roy, and mother, Pratima Roy, Jessie was suddenly uprooted. She had to move with her mother to her old, dilapidated maternal home in North Kolkata, where damp walls carried the smell of moss. Everything was turned upside down; all that remained was her name and the stony expression on her mother's face on the day they left.
Just as Pratima Roy began to rebuild her dreams around her two sons, the tumultuous 1970s crashed down like a molten lava flow. Her job as a matron, the rent from her grandmother Giribala Kundu’s house, and the support of a railway-employed uncle—everything was upended. Jessie, once sheltered in the safe haven of her maternal home, was now forced to swim through the burning currents of time. The novel follows the twists and turns of her life as it takes three more unexpected turns, unfolding a fiery saga of survival and transformation.
