Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay was born on November 2, 1935, in Dhaka, Bangladesh (then East Bengal), and spent his childhood in various places due to his father’s job in the railways. His early life took him to Bihar, North Bengal, East Bengal, and Assam during World War II. He went on to attend Kuch Bihar and later studied at Victoria College before pursuing BA and MA at Calcutta University.
Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay began his career as a school teacher, later becoming a journalist with Anandabazar Patrika. He is widely known for his significant contributions to children’s literature, and his works often explore the inner worlds of children, their struggles, and their imagination.
His first novel was Ghunpoka, and his first children's book was Monojder Adbhut Bari. Shirshendu has received numerous accolades, including the Vidyasagar Award for his contribution to children's literature and the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1989 for his novel Manabjamin.
