Born on March 10, 1944, Somaresh Majumdar is one of the most prominent and respected authors in Bengali literature. His early life in the Duars tea gardens shaped his deep connection with nature, which reflects in his writing. He moved to Kolkata in 1960, where he pursued honors in Bengali from Scottish Church College, followed by an M.A. from Calcutta University.
Before becoming an acclaimed writer, Majumdar was involved in group theater, and later, his passion for drama led him to write stories. His first story was published in 1967 in Desh magazine. He rose to fame with his debut novel 'Dour' in 1975, and since then, his novels, short stories, and plays have been widely recognized. Majumdar has received several accolades, including the Ananda Puraskar in 1982 and the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1984 for his novel Kalbela. His works like Boro Pap He, Ujan Ganga, Basabhumi, Lakshmira Panchali, and Sawar have earned him both national and international recognition.
